If you haven’t seen this film before I believe it’s totally worth a watch. It’s a 2012 documentary exposing the diet and food industry and why diets don’t work. More than 1/3 of women and 1/4 of men in the United States are on a diet. As I discussed in my blog post on Dieting, despite all the money and time being spent on diets people are not losing weight. This film, along with the film I reviewed in November, Fed Up, go deeper into the why. The film highlights interviews with various health experts, some of whom have been obese in their past and were successful at losing weight once switching to a real food diet. The film explores the addictive foods (Sugar, MSG, HFCS, Artificial Sweeteners) that are so prevalent in our food supply and why they are keeping us hungry for more. They also spend a lot of time discussing the importance of real food, particularly vegetables, in helping us turn the tide in our favor. I particularly appreciated how they talked about increasing your intake of healthier foods rather than focusing on all the foods you should cut out, as well as the importance of self-love and exploring emotional connections to the reasons we over-eat. All in all, I think it was well done and with a good message.

Here are some highlights I took away from the film:
-
As a culture we are eating more “food-like” products then real food.
-
Most Americans are over-fed (from addictive and toxic foods) yet under-nourished.
-
Change the brain chemistry by changing the mantra from “I want but I can’t have…” to “I can have…but I don’t want it“
-
Loving yourself is the key to success; start with a morning affirmation: “I accept myself, unconditionally, right now“
